It’s just one problem after another with PC gaming and as soon as you solve one problem another pokes its head out until it gets to the point where you spend half your time trying to get games running properly (or at all) and half the time actually playing the game.

One game crashes all the time, one game doesn’t scale the resolution properly, another stutters and has a highly variable frame time despite a solid frame rate, another game you can’t alt+tab out of or it won’t display properly when you go back, another game doesn’t work properly with this driver or that.

The issue I'm having is 2042 doesn't gracefully resume from alt tab, even on grossly overpowered hardware. Specifically 'Alt Gr' and the + key next to the enter button (not the numpad). There is an alternative way to use Alt-Tab that works for this Excel effect (and may help with yours). You can switch, but you have to remember that to switch away from one of the Excel windows you have to use Alt-Tab-Tab (hold Alt and tap Tab twice). This appears to be due to the way Excel itself handles the Tab key. Releasing the keys leave you still in the same window. Using Alt-Tab to try to switch away from Excel brings up the thumbnails all right, but doesn't highlight the next window. With only one spreadsheet the problem doesn't show. It's easily reproduced, just open two (or more) spreadsheets. I know of a similar (possibly related) problem with Excel windows (and it must be Excel, LibreOffice doesn't have this effect).
